HUMAN RELATIONS BOARD GUIDELINES

Establishment: Article I, Section 5, Charter of the City of Sarasota, as implemented by Chapter 18, Human Relations, Sarasota City Code (1986 as amended).

Board Membership - Qualifications and Other Requirements

a)
The membership of the Board shall consist of persons who possess the technical, professional, financial, business or administrative skills necessary to accomplish the work of the Board.
b)
Preference shall be given to persons who reside or own property in the City, unless business qualifications or a special expertise warrants an exception to the residency/property ownership criteria.
c)
Members shall have reputations for integrity and community service as well as have demonstrated an interest in the type of activity pertaining to the purpose of the Board. Board membership shall be representative of the community at large and reflect the racial, ethnic and cultural makeup of the community.
d) The City Commission makes appointments from submitted applications.
e) Initial appointments to the Board shall be as follows: 3 members shall be chosen to serve for one year; 2 members shall be chosen to serve for two years; and 2 members shall be chosen to serve for three years. Thereafter, all appointees to the Board shall serve for a term of three years.
f)
Board members shall automatically be removed from membership for failure to attend three successive meetings, excluding workshop meetings, or at such time that the member's absences exceed 25% of all scheduled meetings, including workshop meetings, in a given year if the absence has not been approved by the Board, in advance, for good cause shown. Members failing to attend a meeting during at least 75% of the time the meeting is in session shall be considered not to have attended the meeting.
g)
Meetings are generally held the fourth Tuesday every other month beginning in January at 6:00 pm in the City Commission Chambers.
