The grand opening of Phase I of Janie’s Garden on September 1, 2009 was a testimony to commitment and partnerships between the Sarasota community; local, state and federal governmental agencies; and the private sector. It also was as a significant milestone in the Newtown Revitalization Plan. A total of 86 garden apartments and townhomes, ranging from one to four bedrooms, replaced the former Janie Poe public housing development, which was demolished in May 2008. The new mixed-income housing development features a community center with a library, computer lab, exercise room and multi-purpose room. Representatives from the Newtown community, HUD, the Sarasota Housing Authority, Sarasota City Commission, Sarasota County Commission were on hand for the ceremony. Also in attendance was Booker Poe, the grandson of Janie Poe, the development’s namesake, who travelled from Atlanta for the event. By the end of 2009, ground will be broken for Phase II, which will include 68 rental units as well as retail space on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. Phase III will include 73 rental units.
