ACCESS SARASOTA HONORED FOR
VAN WEZEL TALK SHOW

Sarasota, FL – Access Sarasota, the government access television channel, has been honored with a second Telly Award this year.  The latest one recognizes the new talk show “At the Van Wezel…”, produced by the City of Sarasota Communications Office, as an exceptional video production.  The program is a fast paced 30 minute show shot on location at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and features many highlights of upcoming performances.

Telly Awards honor the best television productions throughout the world.  Entries are judged on a high standard of merit, including distinctive creativity.  Outstanding achievement is recognized with a silver Telly, the highest award, or a bronze Telly.  Judges also have the option to give no recognition.  The City received a bronze Telly for “At the Van Wezel...”.

More than 14,000 submissions were entered into the Telly Awards this year.  On average, about 18-25% of the entries are awarded a bronze Telly.  Just 7-10% are selected as silver Telly Award winners.  Previous distinguished winners include Walt Disney Studios, The Weather Channel and Discovery Health Channel.

“It’s especially rewarding to be recognized for quality and creativity for the inaugural “At the Van Wezel” episode because it was produced so quickly,” said Jan Thornburg, Public Information Officer.  “From the time the idea was proposed, we determined the location for the show, the set design, lighting, program format, who would host the show, and had it edited and running on Access Sarasota in about three weeks,” said Thornburg.

“At the Van Wezel” is hosted by the Executive Director of the Van Wezel, Mary Bensel, and Marketing Director, Julia Mays.  The duo discusses upcoming performances and shows oodles of video highlights.  “It’s an entertaining show,” said Thornburg.  “Mary and Julia are energetic.  The video clips are packed with music, dancing and singing. It’s a fun program that educates viewers about what’s going on at the Van Wezel.”

This is the second Telly Award the Communications Office received this year.  The Office was notified last month that it was honored with a prestigious silver Telly Award for two public service announcements about recycling.
