CITY CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY
Sarasota - The City of Sarasota will celebrate
Arbor Day by planting a tree at Booker High School, Fri.,
April 13, 2007 at 10am. |

The goal of Arbor Day is to raise awareness,
especially with children, about the need to plant, protect
and preserve trees. A high rise live oak will be planted.
As a shade tree, it will provide relief from the sun. “High
rise live oaks have become very popular in urban forestry
because they are very columnar when they are young,” said
David Daberkoe, City of Sarasota Arborist. “This is
a major advantage for a street tree, as they often have to
fit in pedestrian and traffic areas where a broader specimen
would cause conflicts,” Daberkoe said. |

Here are more interesting tree facts from
Arborist David Daberkoe:
• Trees prevent cities from becoming heat islands.
They lower surrounding temperatures by as much as 15
degrees.
•
Trees conserve energy. A house shaded by trees can reduce
air conditioning costs by almost 50 percent.
•
Trees act as sound barriers. Each 100 width of trees
can absorb 6-8 decibels of sound.
•
Trees produce oxygen. One mature tree can produce enough
oxygen for a family of four for one year
•
Trees help control flooding. The roots of a moderate
size tree will absorb 400 gallons of water a day
•
Trees absorb carbon dioxide. Through a process called
carbon sequestration, trees absorb air pollution.
Mayor Fredd “Glossie” Atkins will help with
the tree planting ceremony.
