PUBLIC INVITED TO
PARK CEREMONY;
MARCH TO FOLLOW
Sarasota, FL: The public is invited to attend
the dedication and installation of honorarium bricks at
Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park, located at the
southwest corner of U.S. 301 and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Way, Fri., July 20, 2007 at 6pm, followed by the Mayors'
March Toward the Dream at 7pm.
A total of 100 bricks will be installed throughout
Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park, with about 20
being installed by the purchasers themselves during the
ceremony. The smaller pavers, 4 x 8, were sold for $100
to members of the public, while the 8 x 8 bricks went for
$200. The community raised $25,000 through the sale of
the bricks, and received a $75,000 matching grant from
the Selby Foundation. The $100,000 went toward vast improvements
within the park.
Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park underwent a $1.1
million renovation last year and was dedicated in June
2006. Amenities now include a popular pavilion where residents
enjoy social activities, picnic tables, lush shade trees
and restrooms.
Immediately following the ceremony, at approximately 7pm,
Mayor Lou Ann Palmer will lead the community in the Mayors’ March
Toward the Dream, a rally to show support for the continued
revitalization of Newtown. Mayor Palmer and participants
will walk from Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park
about one mile to Martin Luther King Park, where community
leaders will address the need to infuse Newtown with funding,
support and resources. Residents throughout the area are
encouraged to participate in the march. Please wear casual
attire and comfortable walking shoes, bring a hat and sunscreen.
Water will be provided. Transportation also will be provided,
returning participants to Fredd “Glossie” Atkins
Park.
