ELECTRIC VEHICLES
ON DISPLAY

Sarasota, FL: A variety of plug-in electric vehicles will be on display 4:30pm – 8pm Mon., July 21, 2008 at City Hall, 1565 First Street, as the City Commission hears a presentation from the Florida Electric Automobile Association on the benefits of electric vehicles. The presentation will take place in the Commission Chambers at 6pm as part of the regular City Commission meeting. "Electric vehicles are starting to appear all over Florida,” said Michele Mician, City of Sarasota Neighborhood Coordinator. “Currently, plug-in electric vehicles offer one way to reduce our carbon footprint and lower greenhouse gas emissions. As technology improves we can hope to see this energy drawn from solar utility and make plug-in electric vehicles a viable zero emissions alternative," said Mician.

The public is invited to view and test drive one of the seven plug-in vehicles which will be on display along First Street. The vehicles include: a MILES ZX40s fully electric vehicle, a converted Toyota Scion xB called an “eBox” by the conversion company AC Propulsion; Toyota Prius hybrid plug-in, EcoCruiser, Vectrix E-Motorcycle and a Smart Car. Area representatives with the Florida Electric Automobile Association will be on hand to answer questions about the vehicles. City Commissioners also will be invited during their 4:30pm meeting recess to take one of the electric vehicles for a spin, prior to the presentation at 6pm.

The City Commission will consider a resolution at its regular meeting Mon., August 18, 2008, supporting the creation of a market for electric vehicles and supporting the Plug-In Partners National Campaign. The resolution would direct staff to work with local, state and federal governments to identify possible incentives for plug-in electric vehicles and to build a market for them. The Sarasota Board of County Commissioners recently approved a similar resolution.
