Sarasota, FL: The community is invited to meet Lorna Alston, the new General Manager, North Sarasota Redevelopment Division, at a community open house hosted by the Newtown Front Porch Council, Amaryllis Park Association and Sarasota Branch NAACP Thurs., May 14, 2009 at 6pm at the Robert L. Taylor Complex, 1845 34th Street.
Ms. Alston is hitting the ground running, addressing the Community Redevelopment Agency after just two days on the job. She is anxious to meet residents and business owners and contribute toward the revitalization of Newtown. “I was attracted to Newtown by residents’ passion for their community coupled with the Mayor and City’s strong commitment in making Newtown its number one priority,” said Alston. “These two elements are critical to revitalization. This community has a wealth of history and potential and I look forward to the opportunity to being part of it all.”
Ms. Alston worked for the City of Tampa coordinating the East Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the second largest CRA in the nation. For the past four years, she supervised numerous economic and redevelopment activities, including the coordination of Tax Increment Financing dollars and infrastructure enhancements. Ms. Alston has more than 15 years of banking experience dealing with credit analysis, and loan risk management. She also has worked with brownfield redevelopment projects, and previously served as the Treasurer/Secretary of the Florida Brownfields Association.
Mary Mack, Newtown Front Porch Council President, has great expectations for Newtown and sees Ms. Alston as a catalyst for change. She expects the open house will be the “real” New Beginning for Newtown, referring to the City’s initiative with Newtown to bring sustainable change to the community. The New Beginning for Newtown initiative has been underway for the past 15 months.
