ACCESS SARASOTA HONORED FOR
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sarasota, FL – Access Sarasota, the government access television channel, was honored with a prestigious silver Telly Award for two public service announcements produced by the City of Sarasota Communications Office.  Both PSAs focus on the City’s mandatory recycling ordinance.

Telly Awards honor the best television productions throughout the world.  Entries are judged on a high standard of merit, including distinctive creativity.  Outstanding achievement is recognized with a silver Telly, the highest award.  Judges also award a bronze Telly or give no recognition at all.  The City received a silver Telly.

More than 14,000 submissions were entered into the Telly Awards this year.  On average, 7-10% are selected as silver Telly Award winners.  About 18-25% of the entries are awarded a bronze. Previous distinguished winners include Walt Disney Studios, The Weather Channel and Discovery Health Channel.

“This award is such an honor,” said Jan Thornburg, Public Information Officer.  “The judges are video production professionals who previously have been recognized with a silver Telly Award.  They understand the technical aspects of making a creative, high quality production with an effective message on a shoestring budget,” said Thornburg.

The two 30 second PSAs, entitled “David Recycles – Office” and “David Recycles – Residential” were produced with a nominal budget.  The actors are City of Sarasota employees who volunteered to be in the productions.  The PSAs were created with the intention of showing them on Access Sarasota back-to-back to maximize the impact of the message.   “The PSAs are fun,” Thornburg said.  “We incorporated humor into the recycling message by using the City’s logo, the Statue of David, and bringing David to life through the magic of television.  It’s unexpected, funny and memorable.”

This is the second silver Telly Award the Communications Office has received since 2005.  The Office also has received four bronze Telly Awards.
