CITY CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY

Sarasota - The City of Sarasota celebrated Arbor Day this morning by planting a live oak (quercas virginiana) at Bay Haven School, 2901 W. Tamiami Circle. Dozens of school children participated in the event which included a poetry reading and a discussion about the importance of Arbor Day. Vice Mayor Ken Shelin also was on hand to read a proclamation regarding Arbor Day. To view unedited video of the event click here.

The goal of Arbor Day is to raise awareness, especially with children, about the need to plant, protect and preserve trees. “Arbor Day is important because trees are important. Because we are used to having trees around, it is natural to take them for granted, and Arbor Day is just a reminder to appreciate a valuable asset,” said David Daberkoe, City of Sarasota Arborist.

Some interesting tree facts from Arborist David Daberkoe:

• Trees make effective sound barriers
• Trees produce oxygen
• Trees clean the air
• Trees shade and cool
• Trees act as windbreaks
• Trees fight soil erosion
• Trees become carbon sinks
• Trees increase property values
