Sarasota, FL: To help cultivate a more sustainable community, the City of Sarasota is launching a program to assist local commercial and business owners comply with the City’s existing mandatory recycling ordinance. Commercial and business owners are encouraged to take a brief on-line survey about their current recycling program. The City will use the data to guide business owners toward a compliant recycling program with potential cost savings. To participate in the six question survey click here.
“Recycling can possibly save your company money,” said Michele Mician, Environmental Services Coordinator. “By recycling you may reduce the size of your current garbage container or reduce your collection time thus contributing to savings on your overall bill. Also, certain recyclable materials, like cardboard, could actually create revenue for your company,” said Mician.
Recycling is mandatory in the City of Sarasota for businesses and residences by ordinance
since 1994. With sustainability and waste reduction a top priority for the current City Commission, the City is committed to working with commercial and business owners to implement recycling programs. Information on recycling vendors, waste disposal and on-line training modules can be found at yourgreencity.sarasotagov.com “We are happy to provide you with the resources and educational materials that will assist you as you design your recycling program,” said Mician. “The City will be making every effort to educate residents and guests about our recycling program. We request that you educate your workers and guests about the importance of recycling and all policies and procedures that you have or will develop,” said Mician.
The State of Florida set forth policy to reduce recyclable landfill waste by 75% by 2020. By increasing recycling rates, it is anticipated the amount of waste entering the landfill will be reduced and ultimately lengthen the span of time before another landfill site is developed. Also, diverting potential recycling materials from the landfill, such as batteries, aluminum, tin and plastics, will minimize potential environmental impacts.
