Sarasota, FL: The City of Sarasota is issuing a national Call to Artists for a significant sculpture to be installed within Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park. The Call to Artists opens today and closes Thurs. October 15, 2009.
No theme for the artwork has been mandated; however, artists are requested to keep in mind the historical significance of the African-American community where Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park is located, as well as the importance of the park to the neighborhood. The use of one or more bold colors would be an asset, but the creative process will be allowed to be played out by the artist.
Three finalists will be selected by late October to give presentations by no later than December 15, 2009 to the Ad Hoc Selection Committee, which was assembled to select a sculpture for the park. The final selection will be made December 17, 2009. From the time a contract is signed, the artist will have 120 days to complete and install the sculpture. It is anticipated the new artwork will grace Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park by Spring 2010.
The three finalists will receive a stipend of $1,000 to cover expenses incurred for all submission requirements and travel. The total budget for the commissioned artwork is $75,000, including delivery, installation and a 2-year warranty.
The Call to Artists is available on-line at: www.sarasotagov.com/PublicArt
The 7-member Ad Hoc Selection Committee, consists of neighborhood stakeholders, the chairperson of the Public Art Committee and City Commissioner Fredd “Glossie” Atkins, the City’s first African-American City Commissioner, for whom the park is named.
Fredd “Glossie” Atkins Park is located on the southwest corner of U.S. 301 and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. It opened in June 2006. This is the first time public art has been commissioned for a City of Sarasota park.
