CITIZENS' ACADEMY OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT

Sarasota, FL: City of Sarasota residents and business owners interested in learning about the inner workings of their municipal government are encouraged to register for the Citizens’ Academy, an 8-week course which provides a unique look at how City Hall operates. The next Citizens’ Academy is scheduled to be held Thurs., January 21 – March 11, 2010.

The Citizens’ Academy is an interactive experience designed to educate Sarasota residents about City Hall. The sessions are engaging and informative, with City officials providing behind-the-scenes tours. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall staff will provide a backstage look at how the facility juggles entertainment schedules. The Sports and Recreation Department will provide tours of Bobby Jones Golf Course with City employees explaining what it takes to host large events such as the Men’s Annual City Golf Championship. The Citizens’ Academy also will learn about public safety services through the Sarasota Police Department and the Sarasota County Fire Department.

There is no charge for the 8-week course; however participants are asked to commit to attend the seven Thursday night sessions and one Wednesday evening session. The Citizens’ Academy is scheduled to begin Thurs., January 21st and conclude Thurs., March 11th. The Academy will culminate with a graduation ceremony during a City Commission meeting March 15, 2010.
