FL: City of Sarasota residents and business owners interested
in learning about the inner workings of their municipal government
are encouraged to register for the Citizens’ Academy,
an 8-week course which provides a unique look at how City
Hall operates. The next Citizens’ Academy is scheduled
to be held Thurs., January 21 – March 11, 2010.
The Citizens’ Academy is an interactive
experience designed to educate Sarasota residents about City
Hall. The sessions are engaging and informative, with City
officials providing behind-the-scenes tours. The Van Wezel
Performing Arts Hall staff will provide a backstage look at
how the facility juggles entertainment schedules. The Sports
and Recreation Department will provide tours of Bobby Jones
Golf Course with City employees explaining what it takes to
host large events such as the Men’s Annual City Golf
Championship. The Citizens’ Academy also will learn
about public safety services through the Sarasota Police Department
and the Sarasota County Fire Department.
There is no charge for the 8-week course;
however participants are asked to commit to attend the seven
Thursday night sessions and one Wednesday evening session.
The Citizens’ Academy is scheduled to begin Thurs.,
January 21st and conclude Thurs., March 11th. The Academy
will culminate with a graduation ceremony during a City Commission
meeting March 15, 2010.
