| Sarasota, FL: The City of Sarasota, Mote Marine Laboratory and The HuB are partnering to show Google — and the nation — that Sarasota should be chosen as the test market site for the company’s proposed ultra high-speed Internet service. A joint news conference is scheduled for Wed., March 17, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Mote’s shark tank.
Two weeks ago, the Mayor of Duluth, Minn., jumped into a frigid Lake Superior and challenged other mayors across the country to show more commitment for bringing Google Fiber to their communities.
At the news conference, Mayor Richard Clapp will up the ante on the Duluth mayor’s challenge by facing the sharks at Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway.
Vice Mayor Kelly Kirschner will discuss the potential economic impact of Sarasota becoming a test market and Dr. Gary Kirkpatrick, manager of Mote’s Phytoplankton Ecology Program, will talk about how the technology could enhance Mote’s renowned science research and education programs.
Google is asking municipalities throughout the nation to submit information about their communities via a Request for Information (RFI), which will be used to determine where experimental networks will be built. The networks would provide a new Internet service that could be 100 times faster than what most people currently use. Google will then choose the communities for the trial based in-part on the number of nominations received.
A group of community leaders within Sarasota is working to provide the requested information to Google by the Friday, March 26, 2010, deadline.
Anyone can nominate the Sarasota community for Google’s consideration. To nominate Sarasota and to learn more about the Google RFI visit: http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi
