CITY HALL CLOSES FOR VETERANS DAY

Sarasota, FL: City of Sarasota administration offices will be closed November 11, 2008 in observance of Veterans Day. The closing affects City Hall, the Federal Building and Public Works, although solid waste and recycling collection will not be impacted.

Originally called “Armistice Day”, the holiday commemorated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. Fighting ended at 11a.m., the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor those who served in World War II and the Korean War, and today the holiday honors all who have served in the Armed Forces.
