DEPUTY CITY MANAGER
Sarasota, FL – Marlon C. J. Brown has been hired as the new Deputy City Manager, replacing V. Peter Schneider who is retiring next month. His primary responsibility will be to serve as the City’s Chief Operating Officer and supervise the City’s eight departments on day to day activities.
Mr. Brown has more than 15 years of municipal management experience. Currently, he is the County Advisor on Economic Stimulus for the Florida Association of Counties. Mr. Brown also served as the County Manager of Gadsden County as well as the Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Tallahassee.
Mr. Brown has a Bachelor’s Degree in geography from West Virginia University and a Master’s Degree in urban planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
He will join the City staff on July 13, 2009. Mr. Brown will work with V. Peter Schneider for three weeks transitioning into the position before Mr. Schneider retires July 31, 2009 with 20 years of service.
The City received more than 200 applications during a nationwide job search. Five candidates were interviewed in an extensive process. The three Charter Officials, the eight Department Directors and a community panel were all involved with the hiring process. The community panel included: Del Borgsdorf , Vice President, Sarasota Area Chamber of Commerce; Kate Lowman, Chair, Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations; and Isaac Turner, Venice City Manager. Tyrone Hill, Chair, Newtown CRA Advisory Board and Steve Crowell, North Port City Manager, assisted with earlier interviews of two candidates.
