CITY WELCOMES SISTER CITIES

Sarasota, FL: The City of Sarasota will welcome students from three Sister Cities who won a playwriting competition connected to the Florida Studio Theatre based in Sarasota. Eight young playwrights will be honored from three sister cities: Dunfermline, Scotland; Tel Mond, Israel; and Vladimir, Russia.

The Florida Studio Theatre accepted 9,200 plays written by students from all over the United States, plus Sarasota’s Sister Cities. The winning students from Sarasota’s Sister Cities range from 5th grade to 10th grade. Tohar Strul, a 7th grader from Tel Mond, will return to Sarasota to accept her second playwright award in three years. Her award winning play this year is entitled “Red Color”

The students’ plays will be performed Sat., May 17, 2008 at three theatres simultaneously in Sarasota. For more information about the “Write a Play Program” at Florida Studio Theatre click here.

During their stay in Sarasota, our Sister Cities students will visit Selby Gardens, and Mote Marine Aquarium. They also are scheduled to visit Jungle Gardens where many of the youngsters will be wowed by the sight of alligators and flamingoes for the first time.

The young Sister Cities playwrights also will be honored as honorary citizens during the regular City Commission meeting at 2:30pm on Mon., May 19, 2008 at City Hall, 1565 First Street. Immediately following that presentation, the students will attend a reception at City Hall hosted by the City of Sarasota Youth Advisory Board.
