Sarasota, FL:
Sarasota, FL: The City of Sarasota has been honored by an
international coalition of local governments for completing
a greenhouse gas inventory. ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability
recognized Sarasota’s efforts recently during an event
in Atlanta.
ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability
recognizes the completion of a greenhouse gas inventory as
the first of five milestones needed to be achieved in order
to reduce a community’s greenhouse emissions. The City
of Sarasota already is working on the next four milestones:
setting a goal to reduce emissions; designing a climate action
plan; implementing a climate action plan; then monitoring
and re-evaluating the plan.
“The City of Sarasota is thrilled to
receive this milestone award from ICLEI-Local Governments
for Sustainability,” said Alison Albee, City of Sarasota
Environmental Specialist. “But, there is still much
to do. The next step is for the City to develop its local
action plan to continue on ICLEI’s five step path and
continue our progress to address global warming, climate change
and sustainability at the local level,” said Albee.
The City’s greenhouse gas inventory
shows overall emissions have dropped 8.7 percent over the
past four years. The reduction is attributed to making buildings,
lighting and even traffic signals more energy efficient. The
City conducted an inventory in 2003 as a baseline and again
in 2007.
The ICLEI, International council for Local
Environmental Initiatives, was established in 1990. It is
now known as ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability. The
organization assists local governments with goal setting for
climate protection, technical analysis and methods to achieve
their goals.
