INTERIM ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER NAMED

Sarasota, FL: Dr. Lawrence A. Miller has been named Interim Assistant City Manager for the City of Sarasota. Dr. Miller previously held the position of Economic and Development Coordinator since joining the City of Sarasota in October 2006.

As Interim Assistant City Manager, Dr. Miller’s top priority will be communicating directly with City Commissioners on current and long range issues. He also will focus on affordable housing, government and community affairs as well as the implementation of the Newtown redevelopment plan. “This position gives me a greater perspective of

what is going on in the City and being able to meet the needs of the citizens of Sarasota,” said Dr. Miller. He will return to the position of Economic and Development Coordinator when the current fiscal year expires, or when the Interim City Manager reverts to his role as Deputy City Manager, whichever comes first.

Dr. Miller is the first African American to serve as Interim Assistant City Manager. He was appointed by Interim City Manager V. Peter Schneider. “I am thankful to Peter Schneider for the opportunity to work with him and for me to be that first African American,” said Dr. Miller.

Dr. Miller enters his new position with 14 years of senior management experience. He served as Executive Director of Elmcor Youth & Adult Activities, Inc., a human service agency in New York City. Prior to that, he was a Vice President with MTA/New York City Transit, which employs more than 55,000 people. Dr. Miller was also the Executive Director of the Human Rights Commission in Suffolk County, New York.

Dr. Miller is active with the NAACP and Omega Psi Phi fraternity. His extensive community involvement has been recognized by such organizations as the Urban League of Long Island, the City University of New York, Time Warner Cable TV, the Central Island Branch of the NAACP and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

He received his undergraduate degree from York College. Dr. Miller also earned a Master of Arts from Brooklyn College and a Doctoral Degree from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
