INFORMATIONAL MEETING TO BE HELD
ABOUT RECREATIONAL TRAIL

Sarasota, FL:   The City of Sarasota will host an informational meeting about the
West Bayfront Multi-Use Recreational Trail (MURT) Wed., October 28, 2009 at 6pm in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, 1565 First Street.  The meeting is open to the public.

The MURT is a proposed ten foot wide asphalt trail which ultimately will stretch 5.5 miles from Bayfront Park to South Lido Key Park.   It is anticipated the MURT will encourage multi-modal transportation, such as walking and bicycling, and thereby help reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

Phase I of the MURT will stretch 1,400 feet along Bird Key Park.  The community conversation for the planning and designing of Phase I began in 2004.   Throughout the process, the MURT Task Force, comprised of 14 City of Sarasota residents, provided extensive input to City staff; the Parks, Recreation, Environmental and Protection Advisory Board received three presentations from staff and consultants; and several other public meetings were held.

The project, which is 90 percent designed, also will provide much needed enhancements to the park to prevent further beach erosion.  Water access will be safer for kayakers and will meet ADA requirements. On-site parking will be realigned; however, there will continue to be more than enough parking spaces for park users.  Also, Florida friendly landscaping will be installed, including palm trees, shade trees, plants and shrubs.  Dogs still will be allowed on the beach.

At the beginning of the meeting, the City Engineer, the project manager and consultant will provide an overview of the project.  Plans will be available for review and questions will be taken from the public.
