MAYOR, COMMISSIONER TO DANCE AMONG THE STARS

Sarasota, FL – Mayor Fredd “Glossie” Atkins and Commissioner Lou Ann Palmer will glide their way across the dance floor as they compete for top honors at “Dancing Among the Stars”, a benefit for Genesis Health Clinics. Mayor Atkins and Commissioner Palmer are two of eight local celebrity dancers who will participate in the event Sun., November 5, 2006 at 6pm at Chelsea Center, 2506 Gulf Gate Drive.

The evening is based upon ABC’s popular television program, “Dancing with the Stars”. Similar to that show, the charity event will pair local celebrities with a professional dancer. They will have 90 seconds to impress the judges and the audience with a dance of their choice. It could be a waltz, tango, samba, hustle --- anything!

Mayor Atkins and Commissioner Palmer have been taking dance lessons for the past six weeks, compliments of Gotta Dance Studios in Nokomis. Mayor Atkins hopes to wow the judges with the Mambo. Commissioner Palmer, a former dancer and choreographer, is keeping her routine hush-hush until the event.

“Dancing Among the Stars” is this year’s annual fund raiser for Genesis Health Clinics, located in Newtown and Nokomis. The clinics provide free or reduced medical, dental, and behavioral mental health care for those who are uninsured. “I was extremely grateful when they agreed to do it,” said Jim McCloud, Genesis Health Clinics Executive Director referring to Mayor Atkins and Commissioner Palmer. “I thought it would be a hard sell. To dance in front of people takes a lot courage. But, when they heard who it would benefit they agreed without hesitation.”

Other local celebrities slated to dance include: former NFL player Henry Lawrence, professional boxer China Smith, ABC 7 meteorologist Bob Harrigan, Harvest Tabernacle Assistant Pastor Robert Summers and Newtown Redevelopment Assistant Lori Benton.

Tickets are $60 for a single ticket and $100 per couple. Admission includes dinner and dancing with a live band followed by the “Dancing Among the Stars” competition. For more information go to www.genesishealthclinic.org or call 321-9174.
