Sarasota, FL: With an eye on creating a healthier environment for Sarasota Bay and providing new amenities for recreational boaters who visit Sarasota, construction of the Sarasota Bayfront Mooring Field will begin on or around Mon., June 22, 2009. To accommodate the construction, all vessels must vacate the area near Island Park shown on this map.
Phase one of the Mooring Field will include 35 mooring balls. Construction is expected to last throughout the summer:
- North Section: on or around Mon., June 22, 2009
- East Section: Fri., July 3, 2009
- South & West Sections: Sun., August 30, 2009
Impacted boat owners are being notified of the upcoming construction via mail as well as a notice on their boat. Notices also have been posted at nearby O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill on Island Park. Vessels which are still in the area at the time of construction will be removed at the owner’s expense.
The anticipated completion date for the Mooring Field is September 1, 2009, at which time only authorized boats will be allowed to moor within that area. The new Mooring Field will provide boaters not only safe harbor but an array of amenities including a store, laundry facilities, showers, restrooms and pump out facilities. It is anticipated the pump out facilities will help minimize the effluent in Sarasota Bay and nurture healthier waters.
The City is hosting an informational meeting about the Bayfront Mooring Field Tues., June 2, 2009 at 6pm next to O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill. Everyone is welcome.
