PARKING FINES INCREASE

Sarasota – The fine for an overtime parking violation within the City of Sarasota will increase from $7.50 to $15.00 effective Mon., June 4, 2007. The increase is designed to help alleviate parking problems by discouraging drivers from parking illegally. “Hopefully, it will help regulate some of the people who don’t find the $7.50 fine to be a penalty,” said Bob Kamper, City of Sarasota Parking Director. The measure brings Sarasota in line with most southwest Florida cities, where the average cost of an overtime parking ticket is $15.00.

Habitual offenders will also be impacted by the new parking fines. Anyone who receives three parking tickets within 30 days will have a $30.00 fee added onto that third ticket.

The City of Sarasota is also adding a new violation to its parking fines: chalk removal. Anyone caught removing the white chalk placed on tires by parking enforcement officers will be fined $250.00. Both the chalk removal and habitual offender fines become effective Mon., June 4, 2007.
