| Sarasota, FL:
In a unique collaboration to help restore the historic appearance
of Sarasota, the City of Sarasota is partnering with the Laurel
Park Neighborhood Association to re-install brick pavers on
Rawls Avenue. A crew with the Public Works Department will
prep the street, and then residents will roll up their sleeves
and lay bricks along Rawls Ave. for one block, from Oak Street
to Devonshire Lane, Sat., December 19, 2009 starting at 9am.
Rawls Street was due for a road improvement,
after the original bricks on the street had shifted significantly,
creating a very bumpy ride for motorists. The neighborhood
association requested that the Public Works Department preserve
the historic brick appearance, rather than paving the street.
The City struck an agreement with the neighborhood: the City
would grate and level Rawls Ave.; provide the bricks and the
guidance and the residents would literally do the heavy lifting
and lay the bricks. “We’re striking a balance
between the neighborhood’s desire to preserve history
and the City’s need to be efficient with services and
watch the bottom line,” said Doug Jeffcoat, Public Works
General Manager. “This is an unusual partnership. We’re
looking forward to good participation from the neighborhood.”
The Laurel Park Neighborhood Association is
expecting about 20 volunteers to install the estimated 12,000
bricks which will be used to cover the one block area. It’s
expected to be an all day event. Anyone from the public is
welcome to participate.
