DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT
PLACED ON
NATIONAL REGISTER
Sarasota, FL: The Downtown Sarasota Historic District has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior, recognizing the significance of many structures in the downtown. “This is a true victory for the City of Sarasota and historic preservation,” said Dr. Clifford Smith, City of
Sarasota Senior Planner, who began the application process two years ago.
Bound by First Street, Orange Avenue, State Street, Gulf Stream Avenue and N. Pineapple Avenue, the Downtown Sarasota Historic District is the most high profile historic preservation project the City of Sarasota has undertaken in years. Well known structures within the District include:
-
American National Bank Building (now Orange Blossom) - 1330 Main Street
-
Kress Building - 1442 Main Street
-
Worth’s Block (now Gator Club) - 1490 Main Street
-
DeMarcay Hotel - 27 S. Palm Avenue
-
Roth Cigar Factory - 30 Mira Mar Court
-
Edwards Theatre (now Sarasota Opera House) - 61 N. Pineapple Avenue
Historic preservation can be an economic engine for the creation of new jobs, increased
tourism, maintaining property values, and new grant funding. Property owners in the district will be eligible to apply for federal tax credits when available.
Age, integrity and significance are included in the evaluation criteria for placement on the Register of Historic Places. The State of Florida historic preservation review board approved the Downtown Sarasota Historic District prior to approval by the federal government.
The Downtown Sarasota Historic District is listed on the National Register as reference number 09000183.
