CEREMONY MARKS
SEPTEMBER 11TH ANNIVERSARY
Sarasota, FL: The public is invited to attend a ceremony
next week observing the seventh anniversary of the September
11th terrorist attacks. The ceremony will be held at
Payne Park on Thurs., September 11, 2008 at 8:30am.
The ceremony, hosted by the City of Sarasota and Sarasota
County, will include participants from the Sarasota Police
Department, the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office, the Sarasota
County Fire Department and the Sarasota Military Academy.
Sarasota Police Chief Peter J. Abbott will discuss his
challenging and emotional experience as a New York City
police officer in Manhattan on September 11, 2001. The
Sheriff’s Office will conduct a helicopter flyover
during the ceremony and will continue westward to the Gulf
of Mexico where a wreath will be placed remembering those
whose lives were lost.
Location: Just east of the main East Avenue entrance to
Payne Park
Parking: Public parking is available at the municipal
parking garage located at Ringling Boulevard and School
Avenue Surface parking is also available adjacent to the
Skate Park, accessible from School Avenue or Adams Lane.
Rain: In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved
indoors to the Payne Park Auditorium, 2100 Laurel Street.
Tropical Storm/Hurricane: Should the Sarasota area be
threatened by a tropical storm, hurricane or other serious
weather event, the ceremony will be re-scheduled.
