| Sarasota,
FL: City Manager Robert Bartolotta cancelled the State of
Emergency today at noon which he declared May 5, 2010. “The
federal government has predicted the chances of oil coming
ashore here in Sarasota are now very slim,” said Mr.
Bartolotta. “75 percent of the oil in the Gulf of Mexico
has been cleaned up or accounted for and the remaining 25
percent is degrading quickly. So, there’s no need for
City Hall to be in a State of Emergency now.” The State
of Emergency was in effect as a precautionary measure while
the City monitored the Deep Horizon oil spill.
In 2007, voters approved a change to the
City of Sarasota Charter giving the City Manager the authority
to declare a State of Emergency without a City Commission
meeting.
Updated information will continue to be posted
on www.sarasotagov.com.
The website currently has a compilation of telephone numbers,
websites and maps associated with the spill.
In Sarasota, the Sarasota County Emergency
Operations Center is the lead government agency overseeing
the monitoring and cleanup of the oil spill.
