Pedestrian Program

The most popular exercise in America today is walking. This especially holds true for residents of Florida. Florida's year-round sunny allows residents almost daily opportunity to walk for health and enjoyment.

National statistic show that most pedestrian accidents involve our greatest and most precious asset -- our children. The City of Sarasota is dedicated to designing and maintaining pedestrian amenities that offer residents and visitors a safe interconnected pedestrian system. The system is designed to encourage walking for health and as an alternative mode of non-motorized transportation. It is our goal to become a truly walkable community.

The greatest percentage of childhood pedestrian accidents occur in a child's neighborhood, and in the same block where the child lives.

Often these injuries result from a child's physical factors such as having difficulty determining sound, distance and location.

Moreover, many children have a lack of knowledge or understanding of complex traffic situations and rules.
To overcome this risk, parents should actively teach their children good habits such as walking on sidewalks and not the street.

Walking is fun and gives children important freedom! Walking also teaches a child vital lifelong traffic skills!

With you help, we can make our walkable community a reality.
