Contact
|
|
An
association or neighborhood representative should contact the
City of Sarasota Engineering Department at (941) 954-4180 or
submit a Request by letter for Traffic Calming. If your neighborhood
does not have an association established, the Neighborhood Development
Department will assist you in beginning one. They can be reached
at (941) 954-2612.

The
Process
|
|
All
good Traffic Calming plans involve the people living and working
in the neighborhood. The Engineering Department develops a group
of neighborhood residents that would like to participate in
a Traffic Calming Task Force. A Task Force should have approximately
5 - 9 members who represent their association or neighborhood.
These people help to solicit opinions and feedback for the Task
Force meetings and report progress and ideas back to the association.
|
|
A
study area is developed by the Task Force. The Engineering Department
does a traffic study within the defined area and reports the
findings to the Task Force. Note that the Program is based on
a point system. There are five warrants which are evaluated
by certain criteria. Those streets awarded a minimum of six
(6) points are determined to be eligible for traffic calming
measures. Once that determination has been made that the those
neighborhood streets may have traffic calming measures constructed,
the Task Force and the Engineering Department work together
to design a Traffic Calming Master Plan for the neighborhood.
|
|
Plans
are devised by using traffic counts, resident and business input,
ascertaining current street design and conditions, and following
funding guidelines.
|
|
After
the master plan is designed, and approved by Task Force consensus,
an open house is held for neighborhood residents if major design
elements are to be implemented and a postcard survey is mailed
to property owners inquiring if they are in favor of.
|
|
A
public hearing before the City Commission is then held. If approved,
and there is adequate funding, the Master Plan can then be implemented.
Traffic Calming may also be implemented as part of a Neighborhood
Action Strategy initiated by the Neighborhood Development Department.
