Traffic Signal Program

What is the purpose of a traffic signal?

The Engineering Department Traffic Signal System operates to provide safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians at an intersection which has conflicting movements.

What signal system is used by the City?

The City of Sarasota's traffic signal system is a "closed loop system". The main purpose of the "closed loop system" is to coordinate the signal operations between adjacent intersections along an arterial street. These are broken down into timing sections.

If you notice a signal light is out or in flash, please phone the City of Sarasota Public Works Department at 365-7870. They are available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding national holidays.
Public Works after hours emergency signal answering service can be reached at:
954-4148.
If you are reporting a signal problem in the County, please phone the Sarasota County Traffic Signals Department at: 316-1460

Traffic signals that operate under the jurisdiction of the City of Sarasota fall into two categories:

  Signals under City control:

All of the timing and maintenance is the responsibility of the City. The timing is done through the Engineering Department, and the maintenance is done through the Public Works Department.

  Signals under multi-jurisdictional control:

The responsibility for the signals is shared between different agencies. For example, signals on state roadways such as US 41, US 301, and Fruitville Road, are managed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the City. The FDOT is responsible for the timing of the signals, while the City is responsible for the maintenance.
