Career Ladder Explanation

Levels:
Jobs are combined into levels. Levels represent similar responsibilities and requirements. Jobs within a level may not be the same grade; however, it is possible to have a career ladder promotion without changing levels.

Job Title:
All positions in the City of Sarasota have a title, job code, grade and job description.

Job Grade:
Represents the pay range of a position. Listed in parentheses after each job title.

Education:
Minimum education required for a position. Substitution of 2 years of experience in the job can be substituted for a year of education. For example, it would take four years of experience to substitute for an associate degree.

Relevant Work Experience:
Number of years experience in a job or closely related field. The type of experience or related experience is stated in the job description.

High Performance Operation Skills:
Organizations that recognize the importance of managerial excellence require personnel to use a variety of skills in day-to-day use and strategic management. The skills are identified by level in the Career Ladder Key.

City Operation, Policies and Procedures:
The operating policies and procedures that are used to manage the business of the City.

Customer Service:
Skills employees use to assist internal and external customers.

Interpersonal/People Skills:
Set of skills employees use for negotiation, conflict resolution or medication in order to perform the requirements of the job description.

Communication:
Oral and written skills used in the day-to-day function of a position.

Laws and Regulations:
Local, State and Federal laws and regulations that are required to be followed by the City.
