Officer
John Lake, SPD, Officer John Lake took the initiative to explore
obtaining a device that would photograph and record vehicle
license plates. The device is connected to NCIC/FCIC database
and can alert on any plate entered into this system. The Automated
License Plate Recognition system became operational on October
13, 2008. Officer Lake coordinated the set up of this system
from its inception and is the sole operator at this time.
He has linked the system with our Crime Analyst and the City
Parking Enforcement to enhance its use.
Currently the CID can enter vehicle plates of interest into
a “hot list” that will alert when the system recognizes
the plate with one of its four cameras. The system is utilized
to assist and to notify decal expiration, determine the registered
owner’s driver license status, and in stolen vehicle
recovery this system can locate BOLO vehicles and has recently
assisted Parking Enforcement locate five vehicles with outstanding
fines that were booted and resulted in the collection of over
$1000.00.
Officer Lake has volunteered to reassign his hours, when manpower
permits, to assist the Traffic Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Shift
2A and the Special Response and Technical commander. He is
assigned to the North District on Shift 1A and normally works
Patrol Zone 2 with Officer Todd Tschetter.
In the 4th Quarter of 2008, these two officers have effectively
patrolled their assigned area by handling 396 calls for service,
issuing 235 traffic citation, making a total of 284 arrests
(14 felony, 37 misdemeanor and 233 other). They have also
seized approximately twenty vehicles under city’s ordinance
during the quarter. Officer John Lake serves the Sarasota
Police Department with excellence and pride!
Congratulations!
