Neighborhood
Stabilization Program 1
The Neighborhood Stabilization
Program (NSP) is a federally funded initiative established
by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocated
$7.1 million in NSP funds to Sarasota County. This amount
was determined by a formula grant allocation.
The key goal of the NSP program
is to stabilize neighborhoods while also providing affordable
housing. Program funds expended in the NSP program must benefit
households at or below 100% of the area median income adjusted
to household size. Further, the grant requires that 25% of
the program funds benefit households at 50% of median income
adjusted to household size.
Sarasota County executed a grant
agreement with HUD to implement the following eligible NSP
activities:
- Acquire and rehabilitate foreclosed or abandoned
homes in Sarasota County
- Sell homes to qualified - income eligible
homebuyers
- Rent homes to very low income families
The homeownership and rental
strategy is a partnership between Sarsota County and non-profit
partners.
