Street Tree Program-City Planted more than 2,000 trees throughout the community  Green Canopy Partnership
The Street Tree Program - initiated in 1998 - gained momentum in 2000. The City planted 2,200 trees throughout the community, exceeding the ambitious millennium goal set by the Commission. The City commemorated the planting of the 2,000th tree in July of 2000 with a ceremony in the Southeast Neighborhood's Hyde Park Street. In 2008 a Tree Inventory was completed for the City of Sarasota. Over 100,000 trees are planted in City Right of Way.

Recognizing the importance of developing and maintaining a healthy green environment, the Commission committed $1.5 million in the next 10 years to the program.

The City of Sarasota's Public Works Department makes decisions regarding which type of tree to plant depending on soil, lighting and location among other factors. Although the City respects citizen input in the process the ultimate decision regarding tree selection will be left to the expertise of the Public Works Department.
