For Immediate Release: January 6, 2012

Sarasota, FL: The City of Sarasota is partnering with the Green Hopper, a low speed vehicle service, to offer complimentary shuttle service around the Burns Square Business District during a temporary partial closure of Ringling Boulevard. A 5-day trial period will begin Monday, January 9 with service offered 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., during peak lunch time. To view a service map click here.

For safety reasons, the construction zone where two roundabouts are being built on Ringling Boulevard at Pineapple Avenue and Palm is now completely fenced. Pedestrians were creating unsafe conditions as they walked through the construction area trying to cross Ringling. During the Regular City Commission meeting Tuesday night, City Commissioners suggested approaching the Green Hopper to provide people with a safe ride around the construction area and Burns Court.

At this time, the Green Hopper has not defined pick up and drop off points. Anyone interested in a complimentary ride should:

• Call the Green Hopper at 877-323-7238 ext. 5 and notify the driver of your location

• Or flag down the Green Hopper and hop in

The Green Hopper plans to provide updates on the route via Facebook: During the 5-day trial period, drivers will work for tips only.

Large blue signs also are expected to be erected by early next week directing motorists to the Burns Square Business District during the construction period. The two roundabouts on Ringling Boulevard are expected to be finished by summer.
