YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD
Youth Civic Engagement a Priority of the City of Sarasota

The health of our City government includes the active engagement of the young people in our community. For this reason, the City Commission sought creative and effective ways to ensure that youth from diverse backgrounds have a "seat at the Commission table" and, therefore, created the City’s Youth Advisory Board.

Youth participation and involvement in City government promotes the full and healthy development of young people who gain work experience, acquire new skills, learn responsibility and accountability, develop a greater sense of confidence and empowerment, and forge meaningful connections to other youth and adults through civic engagement.

In addition, promoting the youth voice in government decision-making can help City officials enact better policies and programs, especially with regard to youth issues. By listening to youth and making them full partners in the decision-making process, the City can save money on programs that are ineffective in reaching youth and direct resources toward more productive uses.
