The City Commission - with the idea that to establish meaningful citizen participation yields better long-term solutions for neighborhood issues - created the Neighborhood Development Department in 1997. Currently the office is housed within the City's Neighborhood and Development Services Department.

To assist residents in making quality-of-life improvements in their neighborhoods by working with residents, business owners, other City department staff, local lenders and social-service agencies to revive distressed neighborhoods and protect stable ones. To seek innovative and effective ways to stimulate homeowners and business owners to invest in their neighborhoods. To strive to make the City of Sarasota a mosaic of vibrant and healthy neighborhoods.
