Barrier Removal Program

  • The Barrier Removal Program is an important subset of the Home Repair Program. It was created to increase the independence of disabled homeowners in Sarasota. The program makes this goal possible by providing assistance to residents to remove barriers that would otherwise force a disabled resident to leave their home.

  • Examples of eligible improvements include entrance ramps, widening of doorways, modifying bathrooms, and lowering switches. If other repairs unrelated to providing barrier removal are needed, the homeowner must enroll in the Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation Program.

  • Homeowners who are on disability or have a disabled family member that permanently resides in the home and are at or below 80% of the median income, adjusted for family size, may qualify for assistance. The market value of their homes cannot exceed $304,223.
  • Homeowners can obtain assistance up to $15,000 for removal of barriers. Any assistance greater than $3,000 will be in the form of a 0% loan. There will be no repayments during the term of the loan. $3,000 of the loan will be forgiven each year for up to 4 years as long as the property is not sold, transferred or leased.
  • However, If the property is sold, transferred or the recipient no longer lives in the home before the end of 4 years, the balance of the loan is due.

  • Residents of mobile homes or owners of rental properties that are leased to disabled residents may receive assistance up to $3,000 in the form of a grant.
